Ebikes Presented at the Electronics Show in Las Vegas

February 24th, 2010

Ebikes were unveiled at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics show this year and according to the New York Times article in January, the Japanese electronics maker and a major producer of car batteries,Sanyo, showed off a sleek, lightweight e-bike called the Eneloop Hybrid Bicycle.

The Eneloop Hybrid Bicycle came to the US in 2009 at a price of $2300.00. While operating like a real bike it is suggested that you begin to save for the lithium battery that powers it, kicking in at 250 watts, enabling anyone to power up a mountain.

Are these bikes going to take hold in the US? Well they haven’t yet and people are hoping that when most of our travel is within 5 miles of our homes, it just makes sense to get out an electric powered bike rather than a car, get some fresh air and a little exercise as dessert.

While we have come along way with ebikes, it is still hard to convince people that this truly is an alternative to better health and less polution in our cities.  But ebikes will continue to face their challenges. As in China and India getting around on ebikes or regular bikes are an important form of transportation. Whereas in the US many of us see bike riding as a form of exercise or recreation.

As big box retailers struggle with getting into the market of selling ebikes, smaller retailers are becoming a thing of the past.  I really believe that the more ebikes are introduced and shown the greater the interest in ebikes we will see.  If continued increases in gas prices and fuel in general we can hope that riding ebikes will become the norm for commuting and general transportation  in the years to come.
